Fatal I-55 Incident Leads St Louis Police to Apparent Murder-Suicide Investigation
ST. LOUIS, Mo. — What initially appeared to be a deadly pedestrian crash on Interstate 55 early Monday morning led St. Louis police to a nearby home, where investigators discovered another man dead and uncovered evidence pointing to an apparent murder-suicide.
The St Louis Metropolitan Police Department responded shortly before 5 a.m. Monday, August 24, to northbound I-55 near the Arsenal Street exit after a report of a pedestrian being struck by vehicles. An adult man was found deceased at the scene.
Members of the department’s Accident Reconstruction Unit began investigating how the man had ended up on the interstate. Investigators determined that he may have come from the nearby Utah Street overpass.
Officers examined the bridge and discovered evidence on the railing above the northbound lanes. They also began reviewing surveillance footage and canvassing the surrounding neighbourhood.
During that search, officers noticed an open door at a residence in the 3300 block of South Ninth Street in the Soulard neighbourhood. Police observed evidence of a death inside the home and entered to investigate.
Inside, officers discovered a man in his 40s who was deceased. A weapon (KNIFE) was also found at the residence, according to police.
Investigation Links the Two Deaths
Homicide detectives were called to the scene as investigators worked to reconstruct the events leading to both deaths. Police said surveillance footage helped detectives establish a possible connection between the residence and the man involved in the interstate incident.
According to preliminary findings, the man who was later found on I-55 had been seen near the South Ninth Street residence before travelling toward the Utah Street overpass.
Investigators believe the two men knew each other and were in a relationship. Police identified the man found inside the residence as Aaron Hutchings. Authorities are investigating the deaths as an apparent murder-suicide. The investigation remains ongoing, and detectives have not released all details surrounding the circumstances.
The incident has brought together multiple investigative teams as authorities work to establish a complete timeline and determine exactly what happened.
